Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology "Decio de Lorentiis" Picnodonte, fossil
remains on limestone slab, Altamura Limestone. Upper Cretaceous period. 98-65 million
years.
The two slabs of Altamura limestone exhibited bear the impression of a picnodont, a kind of fish with a flat body which was widespread in the Mediterranean sea at the end of the Cretaceous period (about 65 million years) and characteristic of the shallow waters of the carbonate platform. The block, opened along the sagittal plane of the fish, preserves the impression on both slabs.
