Sus scrofa, portions of skeleton partially connected

Up one level
Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Sus scrofa, portions of skeleton partially connected. Riss-Würm interglacial period. 120-80,000 years.

Large portions in anatomical connection of a Pleistocene period wild boar, found inside a “ventarola” Some bone remains making it up bear evident signs of cuts, left by stone tools used by Neanderthal man while it was cut up, whereas other parts of the skeleton are missing altogether.  Therefore, in the Salento, the Neanderthal man included periodical exploration of the “ventarole” amongst their hunting strategies, removing the parts of the animals which most satisfied their needs and leaving the rest of the carcass where it was.
