Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology "Decio de Lorentiis". Sub-Apennine clay,
block with malacological fauna. Lower Pleistocene period. 800-700 thousand years.
The Sub-Apennine clays also called “blue clays” are a quite recent geological formation. Indeed, they date back to the Lower Pleistocene and are characterised by the presence of various types of macrofossils of marine organisms. This block of blue clays is rich in malacofauna, particularly lamellibranchs, gasteropods and brachiopods. It comes from inside the Salentino territory and witnesses the presence of deep sea straits as far back as 800-700 thousand years ago.
