Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Equestrian
statue. Bronze. Kingdom of Benin. 19th century, end
It consists of a cavalier and horse completely independent, it can be typically ascribed to the art of the court of the Kingdoms of Benin, founded in the 15th century by the Yoruba ethnos, one of the most numerous in Africa. The civilisation of Benin, that occupied an enormous territory at the peak of its expansion in the 16th century included between the River Cross in Nigeria up to the High Volta in Ghana, fell at the end of the 19th century under the pressure of the western colonial expansion. The poorly preserved nature makes dating of the two objects ascribable to between the second half and the end of the 19th century.
