Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Tsaye mask.
Wood. Teke art. 19th – 20th century
Typical production of the Teke ethnos, stationed in Gabon and in the Congo, this type of mask, of which few examples remain, was used in ceremonies whose purpose was to strengthen the social and religious cohesion of the Teke.
The surface of the great disk, divided in half by a central difference of level, showed a lively colour on tones of the white, red and brown, of which faint traces remain.
