Civic Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Womanly
statuette, cast. Final phases of the Palaeolithic.
It is a cast from a primary mould of the smallest bone statuette found along with another, at the end of the 1970’s, in Grotta delle Veneri cave in Parabita.
This womanly statuette, coming from fragments of diaphysis, has a fuse-like profile, a rounded head separated from the body by a furrow; the arms with barely recognisable fingers, which are joined under the belly, surrounding the thorax with oval and hanging breasts. The lower part of the statuette is tapered. The rear part only highlights the arm and the buttocks.
All over Italy 19 female figures have been found, in ivory, bone, stone and clay, called “Venuses”, 15 of which come from the Balzi Rossi. Of the latter some plaster casts are exhibited in the Palaeolithic Art section of the Maglie Museum.
