Womanly statuette, cast

Up one level
Civic Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Womanly statuette, cast. Final phases of the Palaeolithic.

The find refers to a cast from a primary mould of the biggest bone statuette found along with another, at the end of the 1970’s, in Grotta delle Veneri cave in Parabita.
The statuette, coming from chippings of the diaphyses of Bos primigenius or Equus caballus, has an elongated upper part of the head, while the part of the neck and of the chin is underlined by two curved furrows. The prominent shoulders continue with the arms which join under the prominent belly. The breasts are of the “a otre” type. The pubic region is evidenced by a deep furrow which divides the thighs. The lower part ends at the height of the knees. The rear part has a realistic yield with the buttocks standing out. Both have been dated to the final phases of the Upper Palaeolithic, although in secondary levels, thanks to residual traces of soil between the folds of the small sculptures, they reconnect to the rites of fertility and perhaps to the cult of the Mother Goddess.
