Civic Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Incised
stone. Limestone. Upper Palaeolithic. 11,500-9,800 years.
The find belongs to the 109 incised stones found in Grotta Romanelli. The block of prismatic-irregular form bears a small animal-like motif on its only flat face, created with the graffito technique which produced small lens shaped removals of the patina.
The figure measures 6.8 cm by 6.5 cm overall The body, in profile, is well shaped and bears thick vertical and horizontal lines; the legs are schematic and without hooves, the head is surmounted by a high branch of horns, determining the form of a cervidae.
However, recent positions tend to identify the figure of an elk, because of the elongated and rectangular muzzle.
