Civic Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Incised
stones Limestone. Upper Palaeolithic. 11,500-9,800 years.
In Mediterranean art which developed in the last phases of the Palaeolithic, the decorative schemes reach completely abstract forms like in the selection of incised stones coming from Grotta Romanelli. Man intervened on them with the Technique of graffito and incision, using pointed and hard instruments like tips or flint burins, making ribbon-like, lozenge and mesh-like drawings whose meaning is completely obscure.
The exhibits on show come from Grotta Romanelli and have ribbon-like or linear, curved, quadrangular motifs on one or more faces or invading the whole surface in a disorderly manner.
