Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Ursus
spelaeus, atlas vertebra and mandible canine. Riss-Würm interglacial period. 120-80,000
years.
Ursus spelaeus, or cave bear appeared in Europe during the course of the Riss glaciation period and spread throughout the forests in Southern Italy during the temperate phases of the Riss-Würm interglacial period. It lived at the same time as the brown bear, which was smaller and which outlived it reaching the present day. The finds belong to two specimens. The atlas vertebra refers to a young adult, whereas the canine shows traces of advanced wear typical of an old bear. The massive structure of the dental apparatus and the signs of wear lead us to believe that the powerful cave bear was an omnivore with a mainly vegetarian diet.
