Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Carcharodon
megalodon, teeth. Miocene period.
In the Miocene period, Pietra Leccese stone, the typical geological formation of the Salento, widely used in local construction work began to form in marine environment. During the mining phases of this rock an enormous fossil heritage came to light, allowing the rich fauna populating the Miocene sea to be reconstructed. The six teeth exhibited belong to an extinct shark, probably the progenitor of the white shark. The Carcarodon megalodon could reach a length of 20 m with the average being 13-15 m. Its mouth opening of approximately 5 m and the large teeth, up to 20 cm long made it the king of the Miocene seas and one of the greatest predators of all times.
