Elephas (Paleoxodon) antiquus, tuskUp one level |
The Elephas antiquus, a very large proboscidea (4-5 m), progenitor of today’s African elephant, appeared in Europe around 700 thousand years ago and survived three glaciations, becoming extinct definitively at the end of the Pleistocene period. The exhibited tusk, broken into six parts recomposed perfectly comes from the Castro cliffs and has been attributed to a specimen which lived in the last interglacial period between 120 and 80 thousand years ago.
