Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Hippopotamus
amphibius, tusks. Riss-Würm interglacial period. 120-80,000 years.
The four tusks, found inside two ventarole, one situated in Melpignano (1,2,3), in the Motta quarry, the other in Maglie in San Sidero locality (4), belong to at least two specimens of Hippopotamus amphibius, species still existing in Africa. The presence of this type of animal, along with the analysis of the sediments, certifies the existence of large lake and swamp areas, which seemed to exist within the Salento area during the Riss-Würm interglacial period and part of the Würm glaciation period.
