Left hemimandible and part of the complex structure right hemimandible with tooth, belonging to a young Elephas (Palaeoxodon) primigenius, better known as the Mammoth. It spread throughout northern Europe in the upper Pleistocene, reaching the Salento, the southernmost place it reached, during the last glacial period, around 60,000 years ago, as is witnessed by the bones of the large pachyderm exhibited in the Museum of Maglie.
