Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Bracelet.
Bronze. Kingdoms of Benin. 16th – 19th century
The open bracelet, weighing about 1 kg, has a triangular section and a refined and complex incision decoration on the whole surface, organised on different registers in which motifs with triangles opposed to the top and finished with a fine mesh shape. The lateral decoration is with narrow mesh bands and rows of small egg shapes. Near the clasp there is another vertical lozenge register of a rhomboid shape. The clasp is a hemispherical nail head with the slightly convex surface, completely decorated with rows of triangles alternately tipped.
Their origin and some stylistic considerations lead us to attribute this bracelet to the court of the Benin Kingdoms.
The use of these bracelets as currency was introduced by the Portuguese and lasted until the start of the British dominion in Nigeria.
