Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Scaldicetus
grandis, fragments of mandibular branch. Middle Miocene period. 15-7 million years.
The pietra leccese stone, formed in the marine environment in the Miocene period, contain an enormous heritage of fossils which allow the rich fauna populating the sea in that period to be reconstructed. The left mandibular branch of a Scaldicetus grandis, the Miocene ancestor of the current dolphins, still has five teeth, three of which are integral and two fragmentary ones.
