Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”.
Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, hemimandible, left humerus and right radius. Riss-Würm
interglacial period. 120-80,000 years.
Remains of bones coming from a “ventarola”, ascribable to two or three specimens. The humerus and the hemimandible with I, II and II molar erupting belong to a sub-adult individual, whereas the radius probably belongs to an adult.
The Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, appeared in Italy about 450-350 thousand years ago and became extinct at the end of the last interglacial period, it was a strong large sized animal which could reach up to 2.5 m in height at withers and had two horns on its snout. It mainly ate leafs but was also capable of grazing on grass, so we can assume that it lived in woods and forests on the edge of great pastures or treed savannas.
