Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Human mandible
on grinder. Facies Laterza-Cellino S. Marco. 2,500-1,800 B.C.
Human mandible cemented by concretions to a mill, found by local enthusiasts in the small natural cave of Serra la Cicora, in the territory of Nardò. Without condoyle, with three molars and two pre-molars on the left branch, three molars and a premolar on the right branch.
In the internal median part of the mandible there is a cervical vertebra. Another bone fragment, probably part of a rib, is also partially visible.
The limestone mill, of trapezoid shape, belonged to the funereal objects of this hypogeal sepulchre.
Between the end of the Neolithic and the end of the bronze age, in the Salento, the inhumation of the dead in small hypogeal cavities, either artificial or natural, like the Serra la Cicora cave, became popular.
