Civic Museum Paleontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Leopard
statues. Bronze. African ethnic Art.
The two objects represent the figure of the leopard in a schematic but very effective technique. The tubular body is completely decorated with applied spiral plaques; the claws hold a small animal.
The attribution of these examples is still problematic. Although purchased in Kenya, the two objects regard a theme which is widespread in the statues of the court of the Kingdoms of Benin, where the leopard symbolises royal authority.
The two examples differ from these splendid and refined productions, moreover preserved in German museums and attributed to the beginning of the Middle Kingdom (16th century), for the strong schematism and for the rear application of the plaques, rather than the small concentric spiral decoration obtained directly with fusion.
