Civic Museum of Palaeontology and Palaeo-ethonology “Decio de Lorentiis”. Rim of
skyphos, fragment. Italo-Mycenaean Pottery. Final bronze age.
Small fragment of slightly everted rim not distinct, with a rounded lip and with a trace of the slightly convex bowl. Outside the decoration is painted diluted brown-black consisting of two horizontal and parallel bands, slightly distanced. The inside is painted with brownish diluted paint.
The fragment belongs to a Mycenaean type skyphos, a sort of deep bowl for holding wine and to drink it from.
It belongs to the italo-Mycenaean productions made locally during the course of the recent and final bronze age (13th, second half – 11th Century B.C.), following long and profitable relation of the local Salentino people with the Mycenaean merchants, coming from the Aegean and heading West, from the initial phases of their civilisation (16th – 15th Century B.C.).
