Akua’mma, fertility doll

This wooden statuette, typical production of the Ashanti of Ghana ethnic, is a typical example of Akua’mma, iconography the protector of fertility. The sample belongs to the most ancient type of Akua’mma. During the course of the 20th century arms and body are actually less schematic.
The girls wore them by tying the small sculpture to the waist of the skirt,  So that only the upper part was visible, to ensure a beautiful and healthy offspring.
